ObTape Lawsuits
The ObTape sling is a surgically inserted medical device used to treat women suffering from stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Between 2003 and its removal from the market in 2006, the ObTape Transobturator Sling was surgically implanted into about 36,000 women for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Stress urinary incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, is a very embarrassing and distressing medical problem affecting many women over the age of 60. Produced by Mentor Worldwide LLC, the ObTape aims to decrease leakage, by creating a sling around the bladder to keep your urethra closed. Mentor’s ObTape sling is what many sufferers of stress urinary incontinence hoped to be a permanent solution to their embarrassing problem. Unfortunately, the ObTape sling did not live up to what these women expected.
What are the Complications from the ObTape Sling?
Unfortunately, studies of the ObTape sling have shown that the body’s high rejection rate of the surgery results in problems that are more serious than the initial lack of bladder control. A 2006 article in the Journal of Urology stated that more than 13% of women’s treated with ObTape developed painful vaginal extrusions. Other problems with ObTape sling included pain during intercourse, persistent and malodorous vaginal discharge, as well as the erosion of the ObTape sling through the walls of the vagina. Mentor’s sling has even been linked to recurrence of stress urinary incontinence, which is what the ObTape was initially implanted to remedy. While initially it was assumed that these complications occurred as the result of doctors’ mistakes during surgery, experts have since stated that the ObTape sling was dangerous and inherently negligent by design, and that it was denser than it needed to be. Other types of vaginal slings have been crafted with mesh materials that allow for the surrounding tissues to receive nutrients, while the ObTape sling pushes into the vaginal wall causing very unpleasant results including cutting, tearing, and even permanent vaginal wall erosion. These problems as well as adverse event reports filed with the FDA resulted in the ObTape sling’s removal from the market, and discontinuation as a treatment option for stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
